FEEDING THE ELDERLY AND THE MOST VULNERABLE FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN IN BIHAR AND JHARKHAND

As the Crisis around the Corona Virus (Covid-19) Pandemic grows, the livelihood and lives of a large number of families – especially vulnerable, elderly and aged have been shaken up.

With the recent lockdowns in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, while we have quickly adapted to working from home, a large part of our community has been going to bed without knowing if they will be able to afford a meal for their family the next day. Many of the fellow being are stranded and are finding ways to return to home, to their villages. Daily wage Labourers, Workers at construction sites, shops, restaurants, homeless populations, local transport workers, beggars, slum dwellers, several low-income groups as well as the elderly who live alone has seen their only source of living come to a screeching halt, leaving them with little or no means to earn themselves a meal during these days of lockdown.

Thousands of daily wage labourers, elderly and aged are impacted because of COVID-19. While the govt has moved forward with relief packages to help the poor of the country navigate through these bad times, we need to understand that the task is massive and state/central government efforts alone will not be enough. Many most vulnerable families are not registered, are migrant labour and need our help to survive this crisis. Facilitating access of services to aged and elderly is another massive task.

To assist our fellow citizens in need, “The Janaki Foundation” (JF) and its Unit “Rashmi Centre of Excellence (RCoE) on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptations” (DRR/CCA) has moved forward to provide food support and correct, reliable information to such families and to help them have a reliable supply of meals for at least a month in this crucial juncture. Urgent Relief is the need of the hour.
